Focus and Scope

The Methodist DeBakey Cardiovascular Journal (MDCVJ) supports the educational mission of Houston Methodist DeBakey CV Education by empowering the next generation of heart and vascular specialists to gain knowledge and stay informed on best practices, clinical treatments, and promising research in cardiovascular medicine. Each peer-reviewed issue publishes thematic curated reviews describing the current state of relevant and timely cardiovascular topics. Issues also includes peer-reviewed case reports, multimodality images, Interactive CME Case quizzes, and humanities articles.

Geared towards cardiologists, cardiovascular surgeons, general practitioners, and CV residents and fellows, MDCVJ explores a robust range of timely issues—from updates in cardiology and cardiovascular surgery subspecialties, such as cardiovascular imaging, aortic disease, cardiac critical care, and percutaneous valve disease, to public health and cultural concerns such as the cardiovascular impact of COVID-19, quality and patient safety, and digital health. The journal is published quarterly in both online and print formats, with a limited free print distribution to subscribers. Case reports are published on a continuous basis in an online issue.

Publication Frequency

Invited reviews, Points to Remember, and humanities articles are published quarterly in both print and online formats. Case reports and museum pages are made available online as soon as they are ready to ensure that there are no unnecessary delays in making content publicly available. Select cases and images also may be published in the quarterly print versions.

Open Access Policy

This journal provides immediate open access to its content on the principle that making research freely available to the public supports a greater global exchange of knowledge. There is no embargo on the journal’s publications. Submission and acceptance dates, along with publication dates, are made available in PDF format for each paper.

Authors of articles published remain the copyright holders and grant third parties the right to use, reproduce, and share the article according to the Creative Commons NonCommercial license agreement. All content copyrighted by outside parties will be noted in figure/table captions; anyone planning to use such content must contact the original copyright holder for permission. For commercial use, please contact the editorial team at mdcvj@houstonmethodist.org. If approved, the content will be provided free of charge.

Authors are encouraged to publish their data in recommended repositories. For a list of generic and subject-specific repositories that meet our peer review criteria, visit the Open Access Directory or datacite.org.

Annotation and Post-Publication Comment

The journal platform permits readers to leave comments on the publication page, via the Disqus service. Readers will need a Disqus account to leave comments. Comments may be moderated by the journal, however, if they are non-offensive and relevant to the publication subject, comments will remain online without edit.

The journal platform also includes in-browser annotation and text highlighting options on full text formats via hypothes.is. Readers will require a hypothes.is account to create annotations, and will have the option to make these publicly available, available to a group, or private.

Advertisement Policy

The journal only displays advertisements that are of relevance to its scope and will be of interest to the readership (e.g. upcoming conferences). All advertising space is provided free of charge and the editor and publisher have the right to decline or withdraw adverts at any point. Adverts will include a text heading to make it clear that they are adverts not related to the journal.

Journal History

The Methodist DeBakey Cardiovascular Journal was established in 2004 by William L Winters Jr, MD, MACC. Dr. Winters envisioned the journal as collections of curated review articles focusing on specific themes in cardiovascular medicine to be used as an educational resource by cardiovascular practitioners. Over time, the journal began accepting unsolicited case reports, multimodality images, Case of the Month quizzes, and humanities articles.

MDCVJ is published and funded by Houston Methodist. Its editorial team operates under the umbrella of DeBakey CV Education, the educational arm of the Houston Methodist DeBakey Heart & Vascular Center.

In 2020, the journal transitioned to a hybrid online format with limited print run by subscription. Invited reviews, humanities, and museum images are published quarterly in both print and online formats. In addition, the journal began publishing online-only content (including additional invited reviews, case reports, Interactive CME Case quizzes, and images) between the quarterly print issues.

Journal Archiving

The journal’s publisher focuses on making content discoverable and accessible through indexing services. This journal is indexed by PubMed Central and MEDLINE and content is LOCKSS enabled.
