The editors of the Methodist DeBakey Cardiovascular Journal extend their sincerest thanks to Dipan J. Shah, MD, for his support and guidance in creating this issue on cardiovascular imaging.

Dipan J. Shah, MD

Dr. Shah is the director of the Cardiovascular (CV) Imaging Institute at Houston Methodist Hospital and program director for the Advanced CV Imaging Fellowship Program. He joined Houston Methodist in 2008 to found the hospital's Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance Imaging (CMR) Laboratory, which has since grown to become one of the largest CMR laboratories in the United States, performing nearly 4,000 studies annually. Dr. Shah also holds an academic appointment as associate professor of clinical medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College. His clinical interests are in advanced cardiac and vascular imaging, particularly the evaluation of ischemic heart disease and peripheral arterial disease using MRI, while his research is geared toward establishing the role of cardiovascular MRI in the evaluation and management of heart failure and valvular heart disease.

Dr. Shah earned his medical degree at the Medical College of Wisconsin and stayed on to complete his internal medicine residency training. After finishing a general cardiology fellowship at Illinois Masonic Medical Center, he pursued additional specialty training in cardiac imaging through an advanced echocardiography fellowship at Northwestern University and another advanced fellowship in CMR at Duke University. In 2002, he became an associate in medicine at the Duke Cardiovascular MRI Center in Durham, North Carolina. A year later, he went on to join the St. Thomas Heart Institute in Nashville, where he directed the Lipid and Vascular Medicine Clinic and developed a program for CMR imaging.

Dr. Shah has received research grants from the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, and industry partnerships and has published more than 150 peer-reviewed manuscripts and book chapters. In addition, he has given more than 100 presentations at national and international cardiology and radiology scientific meetings and is a frequent invited speaker at the scientific sessions of the American College of Cardiology (ACC), the American Heart Association, and the Society of Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance (SCMR). He has served on numerous committees for the ACC and SCMR and was a member of the writing group that developed the ACC/SCMR 2017 Recommendations for Noninvasive Evaluation of Native Valvular Regurgitation.
