The editors of the Methodist DeBakey Cardiovascular Journal thank Sandeep Sahay, MD, FCCP, and Ashrith Guha, MD, MPH, FACC, for their leadership and inspiration in curating this special issue on pulmonary hypertension (PH).
Dr Sahay is trained in pulmonary critical care medicine and has expertise in pulmonary vascular diseases. He is codirector of the PH and Chronic Thromboembolic Pulmonary Hypertension (CTEPH) Programs at Houston Methodist Hospital and assistant professor of clinical medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College. Dr. Sahay earned his medical degree at the Maulana Azad Medical College at the University of Delhi in India and completed residency in pulmonary medicine (Vallabhbhai Patel Chest Institute at the University of Delhi) before moving to the US. He did his residency training in internal medicine at Cleveland Clinic Akron General and a fellowship in pulmonary critical care medicine at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston.
Dr. Sahay’s primary research interest is group 1 PH. He currently serves as the principal investigator (PI) on multiple clinical trials involving pulmonary vascular diseases and has published numerous scientific papers on the related subject. Dr. Sahay was awarded the American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP) CHEST Foundation Research Grant in Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension in 2017 and an ACCP CHEST interstitial lung disease research award in 2020. In 2021, he received a research grant from United Therapeutics to study proteomics and genomics in portopulmonary hypertension. Dr. Sahay is an associate editor for Respiratory Medicine and Frontiers in Medicine and on the editorial board of Pulmonary Circulation. He is also a member of the Pulmonary Hypertension Association (serving on the PHCC Accreditation Review Committee and PHAR Registry Liaison Committee) and the ACCP CHEST Pulmonary Vascular Disease Network Steering Committee. He enjoys teaching and learning from the Methodist faculty and fellows as well as medical colleagues around the world. Most of all, he appreciates the opportunity to care for patients with PH.
Dr. Guha is the director of the Pulmonary Hypertension Program in the Houston Methodist DeBakey Heart & Vascular Center, codirector of the CTEPH Program, and associate medical director of the Heart Transplant Program. As a member of Houston Methodist DeBakey Cardiology Associates, Dr. Guha specializes in patients with advanced heart failure, mechanical circulatory support, cardiac transplants, and PH. After earning his medical degree from St. John's Medical College in India, he completed a Master of Public Health specializing in epidemiology at the University of Alabama. Dr. Guha completed his residency at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth and was chief fellow during his cardiology and advanced heart failure fellowship at the University of Iowa.
Today, Dr. Guha leads a translational and basic science research laboratory focused on finding new pathways causing right ventricular dysfunction. His laboratory—which is funded by the National Institutes of Health and American Heart Association—studies animal models of PH as well as human tissue from transplant recipients with PH. He is the PI of several clinical trials related to PH, CTEPH, and heart failure and is presently focused on pathways that lead to increased right ventricular fibrosis and thus worsening right heart failure.
