Arvind Bhimaraj, MD, MPH

The editors of the Methodist DeBakey Cardiovascular Journal thank Arvind Bhimaraj, MD, MPH, for his expert guidance in curating this issue on cardiogenic shock. Dr. Bhimaraj is the interim chief of the Division of Heart Failure and medical director of the Advanced Heart Failure, Mechanical Assist Devices and Heart Transplant Program at Houston Methodist DeBakey Heart & Vascular Center. He is also codirector of Houston Methodist’s Heart Failure and Transplantation Translational Laboratory and Heart Failure Disease Management Service and cochairs the heart failure quality strategic committee that oversees all quality efforts related to heart failure at Houston Methodist Hospital.

Dr. Bhimaraj earned his medical degree from Gandhi Medical College, Hyderabad, India, and his Master of Public Health from the University of Kansas in Kansas City. He completed his residency at Drexel University College of Medicine, his cardiology fellowship at John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County, and his advanced heart failure and transplant cardiology fellowship at Cleveland Clinic and started as faculty at Houston Methodist in 2011.

Throughout his career, Dr. Bhimaraj has published extensively in scholarly publications about heart failure, cardiogenic shock, and transplantation and has participated as a site principal or coinvestigator in 24 clinical trials. His translational research interest lies in the role of endothelial cell transitioning in cardiac recovery from heart failure. His clinical research interest rests in principles of hemodynamics utilizing pressure volume loops. He is a participant in and has been certified by the TEACH (Training and Education in Advanced Cardiovascular Hemodynamics) program to use hemodynamic simulations for education. Although his passion is organizing systems of care for and studying the complex hemodynamics of cardiogenic shock, he is currently performing clinical studies (in collaboration with imaging colleagues) to look at pressure-volume loops in patients post heart transplant, studying the diastolic myocardial properties of the heart in this setting.

Dr. Bhimaraj has also volunteered on various committees in professional societies. Of note, he recently accomplished a term as a chair of the Early Career Committee (ECC) of the Heart Failure Society of America (HFSA) and is currently active in the program committee of the same organization. As a chair of the ECC, he has been credited with helping to organize many practical hands-on educational sessions at the annual scientific meeting of the HFSA and bringing the pressure-volume loop educational sessions to the forefront at the meeting.
