The editors of the Methodist DeBakey Cardiovascular Journal send sincerest thanks to Steven Petak, M.D., J.D., and Archana Sadhu, M.D., for leading this issue exploring diabetes and the heart. In summer 2017, Dr. Petak and Dr. Richard Robbins updated readers on the latest research in hormones and cardiovascular disease (Issue 13.2). This issue continues the endocrinology theme with a closer look at the intersection of diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Steven Petak, M.D., J.D.

Dr. Petak is an associate clinical professor at Weill-Cornell Medical College and is division head and chief of the diabetes, endocrinology, and metabolism service at Houston Methodist Hospital. He earned his medical degree at the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago and went on to law school, where he graduated magna cum laude from the University of Houston. After completing his internship and residency at the University of Texas Medical School at Houston, he stayed on to serve as chief medical resident and to complete a fellowship in endocrinology and metabolism. Before joining the academic endocrine group at Houston Methodist Hospital in May 2013, Dr. Petak spent 26 years at the Texas Institute for Reproductive Medicine and Endocrinology.

Dr. Petak is a past president of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, the American College of Endocrinology (ACE), and the International Society for Clinical Densitometry (ISCD) and currently serves as chair of the board of councilors of the Texas Medical Association, representing the Harris County Medical Society as vice-councilor. In addition, Dr. Petak was designated a Master of the ACE and has received the ACE’s Yank Coble Public Service Award, the ISCD’s Paul Miller Public Service Award, and the ISCD’s Clinician of the Year. For the past 14 years, he has consulted on bone densitometry and endocrine issues for NASA’s Johnson Space Center, where he assists the NASA Bone Summit in planning long-duration space missions.

Archana Sadhu, M.D.

Dr. Sadhu is the director of the Houston Methodist System Diabetes Management Program. She unifies diabetes clinical practice across Houston Methodist hospitals using evidence-based protocols and tracks quality metrics to improve outcomes. In 2010, she helped create and now directs a novel endocrine transplant program in conjunction with the Houston Methodist J.C. Walter Jr. Transplant Center and Houston Methodist DeBakey Heart & Vascular Center. She holds faculty appointments at Weill Cornell Medical College, Houston Methodist Institute for Academic Medicine, and Texas A&M Health Science Center. Dr. Sadhu earned her medical degree from the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA), where she subsequently completed her internship and residency in internal medicine and fellowship in endocrinology, diabetes, and hypertension. Before moving to Houston, she spent six years directing the Inpatient Hyperglycemia Management Program at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center.

Dr. Sadhu focuses her clinical research on diabetes prevention and management and improving patient outcomes. She has lectured and published extensively on these topics and is a section editor for Current Diabetes Reports. Throughout her career, Dr. Sadhu has been actively involved in committees for national endocrinology professional societies such as the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists and the American Diabetes Association, and she is an inducted fellow in the American College of Endocrinology. Her educational interests are in teaching primary care and nonendocrinologist physicians about the latest diabetes management strategies, and we welcome her expertise in guiding this issue.
